Ella love

Ella sang it sweet
Got it bad and that ain’t good
High notes hitting
Like love never could

That sink or swim feeling
Emotion universal
Yet with each new dream
Romantic dress rehearsal

Drum continues beating
In your soul’s direction
All of my heartbreak’s
Bittersweet confection

Notes on the page that
I can only sing alone
The pull of percussion
Hypnotic touch, unknown

Will you, won’t you
In my head, on repeat
That tune played throughout
All the sleepless weeks

Glad I’m mad about him
But aching for key change
Carry on, discordant
Harmonies estranged

Why do I stay on then
With this distant band
Another day gone, and
Still an empty hand

The loneliest number
And all that jazz
But I know my heart
Can’t take what it has

Done with the beats
Crescendos and back
Down, pianissimo, then
Fade to black

Still though,
This tempo is tempered
While the timbre of
My heartstrings

keep
getting

struck.
